Chelsea are reportedly prepared to “break the bank” this summer to sign Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, with the Blues viewing the Argentine as the final piece in their attacking jigsaw, according to multiple reports.

A Return to the Premier League?

Alvarez left Manchester City for Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2024, seeking a more prominent role after playing second fiddle to Erling Haaland. The 26-year-old has impressed in La Liga, scoring 14 goals and providing eight assists in all competitions this season, but sources close to the player suggest he misses the intensity and profile of the Premier League.

Chelsea’s interest is understood to be concrete rather than speculative. The club have already made internal assessments of Alvarez’s suitability for their system under Enzo Maresca, and co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart have reportedly held preliminary talks with the player’s representatives.

What Would Alvarez Bring?

The Argentine World Cup winner is one of the most versatile forwards in world football. Equally comfortable playing as a centre-forward, second striker, or on either wing, Alvarez would give Maresca enormous tactical flexibility. His work rate, pressing numbers, and ability to link play make him ideal for Chelsea’s possession-based approach.

With Chelsea currently sitting fourth in the Premier League on 44 points and looking to cement their return to the Champions League, the addition of a player of Alvarez’s calibre could be transformative.

The Price Tag

Atletico are under no pressure to sell and would demand a fee in excess of £75 million — potentially rising to £90 million with add-ons. While that represents a significant outlay, Chelsea’s ownership group have shown no reluctance to spend heavily since taking over, with the club’s total expenditure since 2022 already exceeding £1 billion.

Manchester City are not expected to exercise any buy-back clause, having already reinvested in Antoine Semenyo as part of their squad rebuild.

Other clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, have been linked with Alvarez, but Chelsea are believed to be leading the race at this stage.
